The ad lists 5 key skills yet in resume workshops, most people only identify 1 or 2 of the skills. And this newspaper ad is only about a ¼ inch in length. What happens when a job description or job ad is ½ page or more? If the average person can?t easily identify the skills in such a short job ad you can imagine they won?t be able to correctly identify all required skills in a much longer job ad. Teaching this in classes, it became readily apparent to me that people read a job ad, jump to some conclusions about what ?they think? is needed. However, what they really need to do is underline all skills in each job ad that they possess. Then build their resumes around these skills and abilities.
In my book, I provide detailed worksheets showing how to do this correctly, as well as providing skill lists and sample sentences for over 50 career fields ? but rather than copying something from my book, it?s far more important that I teach you how to analyze job ads so that you develop your own unique skill list because your unique skills will sell you far better than copying a list of someone else?s skills.
